XP853 is the Westland Scout Helicopter I purchased in 2005. The pictures above show a little of the history from its beginning in 1962 through to its demise to a scrapyard.
Westland built around 150 of the Scout AH1 Helicopter and they were used all over the world. The Scout's saw action in the Falklands war and in Northern Ireland. There are still a number of flying examples around in private hands but they are mostly to be found in static condition in museums.
Since its retirement in the 1980's XP853 was first used as an instructional frame and then stored at Bramley Air Base. Things looked up when 2 other Scouts and this one were rescued by a helicopter restoration club with the view to making 1 good example. Apparently the club lost its storage and XP853 and the rest of the collection ended up in a scrapyard in Devon. Thankfully they decided to list them all on eBay!
Over the last couple of years I have been collecting up parts including an original Rolls Royce "Nimbus" engine and rotor blades but as you can see there is still a long way to go!
This old warbird will only ever be a static garden display but if you come across any parts that you think may be of use please feel free to contact me. Take a look at the pictures of the on-going restoration.
